Although I accept that stuff have improved a lot over the past quarter century, I will claim that the better sportbikes that debuted 25 years ago had better suspension, frames and handling than basic transportation like the Z650, MT07 and SV650 of today. Take a look at the specifications of the ZX-7, GSX-R750 and FZR750 for the 1993 model year and you find USD forks, mono rear shocks, large triple discs, alloy frames, liquid cooled fours and radial tyres fitted to 3.50-17 / 5.50-17 rims. Pretty similar to today. What we have now is FI, ABS, ride modes and refined suspension and brakes, but basically the same bikes. The real jump in hardware took place between 1983 and 1989. I'd be very interested to see a track test made by a racer between a 2018 GSX1000F and a 1993 Fireblade, or some similar pairing, with both bikes fitted with the same tyres.
